Code: IT2-ON
Duration: 4 days and 3 nights
Availability: Closed from January to March

Day 1: Leaving Panama City on an early flight, we will travel to Pedasi, staying at a picturesque hotel with folkloric architecture. In the morning, we will visit Cerro Juan Diaz, where the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute manages an archaeological excavation 2,000 years old. The archeologists will describe the customs, fishing and hunting techniques, commercial exchange and style of life of the first inhabitants of the Isthmus of Panama.

After lunch we will take a break in the hotel and then travel to Isla Cañas, the most important turtle-nesting site of the Panamanian Pacific. A boat trip in Cañas estuary will allowed us to appreciate wonderful marine birds feeding on mudflats and between mangrove roots.  Our tour guide will describe to us the importance of mangrove to fisheries and their ecological value. After dinner we will hike along a 9 miles beach to observe sea turtles nesting and if we are lucky, also burning. We will help the people of the town to move some nests to the nursery, as part of the conservation program of this marine resource. At about midnight we will travel back to the hotel.

Day 2: The morning open to rest after a long turtle watching night. Those who like to join us to the beach, for swimming or sun tanning are welcome. In the afternoon we will visit Achotines Laboratory, a research hatchery of tuna, snappers and sea basses, managed by the Tropical Tuna Commission. Biologist will explain the complicated and delicate process of hatching tunas in captivity. We will appreciate a huge tank with more than 20 tunas over 100 pounds each that are reproducing every day in captivity, the larva produced by them, and the aquaculture techniques for producing also their food in laboratory

Day 3: We will then navigate to Iguana Island where we will spend the second day. We will hike along the tropical forest and rocky shores of the island in the morning, observing marine birds, green and black iguanas, and other species in their natural habitat.

We will spend the afternoon snorkeling in the biggest (37 acres), oldest (500 year), best studied, and uniquely protected coral reef in the Gulf of Panama (GoP). It houses biggest and oldest coral colonies of the GoP, is blessed with more than 200 fish species and 13 of the 20 coral species that inhabit the Eastern Pacific. This shallow reef will let even the inexperienced snorkeler enjoy its beauty. If you don't know snorkeling… don't worry, we will teach you in a safe bay. Those not seeking adventures on the reef can enjoy the beautiful white sandy beach El Cirial inhabited by thousands of hermit crabs and other invertebrates.

Day 4: Morning open to go to the beach or rest. After lunch we will visit Sarigua National Park, a salt marsh surrounded by mangroves and archaeological sites. Our guide will show us the effects of desertification, eolic and hydrologic erosion, and we will hike along a nature trail through an extremely dry forest. Late flight to Panama City.

Includes: Aerial transportation, lodging (a/c) for 3 nights in double room occupancy and all breakfasts, boats, specialized guides, conservation fees (Isla Cañas = $3; Isla Iguana = $3; Cerro Juan Díaz = $5; Sarigua = $3), and information literature. Optional: Snorkeling equipment.
