Top Tourist Attractions of Guatemala The five systems

Although small in area, Guatemala boasts an astonishing variety of atttractions and, of course, you want to see everything. This is not as outlandish as it sounds. You just need to know "the five systems" -- the method, not completely abitrary, tourism planners have used to divide the country into manageable zones where particular types of attractions are represented particularly well.
So you select all five systems and see a little bit of everything, or select the areas that interest you for more detailed scrutiny. This guide will help you make up your mind.
System 1: Guatemala, Modern and Colonial
As it says, this is the country's old and new faces, almost side by side as represented by
its bustling capital, Guatemala City, and the old colonial capital of Antigua.
System 2: The Living Maya Highlands
Lake Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Huehuetenango -- astonishing mountains, volcanoes and
lakes and fascinating towns and villages where Mayan Indian traditions live on.
System 4: A Different Caribbean
Different from the sandy, palm-fringed beaches of the other Caribbean, that is. There is
little tourist infrasctructure in this area of primitive, rugged beauty.
System 5: A Natural Paradise
Definitely off the beaten tourist parth, the provinces and Alta and Baja Verapaz are two
of the most picturesque, rich in folklore and natural wonders.
